Jana Bharatham

Natyarangam launched a unique project called JANA BHARATHAM – an outreach project in 2003.

The objective is to take Bharatanatyam to new audiences in new venues in an informal and interactive presentation.

Groups of dancers have been performing in schools, orphanages, old-age homes, villages and tsunami-hit hamlets, art exhibitions etc. They present the nuances of the dance in an interesting combination of education and entertainment.

Recently, Aanmajothi, an organisation with similar interests, has joined us in this quest.

We conduct one- and- a- half- hour concerts in Schools run by the Corporation of Chennai and the Government. These sessions are interactive and involve the children in deciphering the exquisite grammar of Bharathanatyam as well as the creative and artistic liberty available for the dancers to express their joy and talent.

Readers are welcome to offer their suggestions as well as to volunteer their services for these outreach programmes.
